Marian Vajda, the former coach of Novak Djokovic, has offered a rare and honest insight into the remarkable ascent of the Serbian player to tennis greatness, acknowledging that he "could never have imagined" that his mentee would eventually be recognized as the greatest player in the history of the sport.
Vajda, who coached Djokovic from 2006 to 2022, with a short break in 2017 and 2018, has been crucial in shaping a career that has redefined tennis history. Together, they achieved 20 of Djokovic's 24 Grand Slam titles and 85 out of his 99 career singles wins. Their partnership has established Vajda as the most accomplished coach in men's tennis history, a distinction that earned him the ATP Coach of the Year award in 2018.
Djokovic's level of dominance is extraordinary. He has set records for the most Grand Slam titles, the most Masters 1000 championships (40), and the most ATP Finals victories (seven). Additionally, he has spent more seasons ranked as the world No. 1 than any other player (eight) and has an incredible total of 428 weeks atop the ATP rankings. During a recent interview with Radio Television of Serbia, Vajda reflected on his initial days working with Djokovic, sharing memories from a meeting when the future tennis star was still a teenager. Vajda recalls that Djokovic displayed an exceptional blend of confidence and ambition that indicated his future greatness. “When I first met him, he was very young, and he radiated confidence,” Vajda remembered. “He said to me: ‘Maran, I’m going to be the number one in tennis.’”
At that time, Vajda acknowledges that he couldn’t fully comprehend the magnitude of what Djokovic would eventually accomplish. “When we began our collaboration, I believed things couldn’t get any better. He was undoubtedly the best player who deserved this recognition, and it was truly remarkable to observe,” Vajda reflected. “As a coach, I witnessed his growth, how his training became increasingly focused, and how he transformed as a player. For Novak, however, the objective was always clear – to become No. 1 and secure all the major titles, particularly the Grand Slams.”
As Vajda reflects on their shared journey, he can only be in awe of the enormity of Djokovic’s career. “It’s been an amazing experience,” he remarked. “Looking back now at all those achievements, it truly is remarkable. I could have never anticipated that he would amass so many titles, dominate tournaments, and become the greatest in tennis history.”
