\\\"It was a great match up until this point,\\\" said Gauff, showing pain and frustration. \\\"I wish Naomi a speedy recovery. No one wants to win a match like this, especially with one-set all.\\\" Gauff, though beaming with the win, conceded that neither her tennis nor her opponent's seemed good enough to wrap up the match. \\\"Overall, I tried my best. It wasn't my best tennis,\\\" she added.

The match had promised much for Osaka, who arrived at the tournament under new coach Patrick Mouratoglou, signaling something of a fresh start for a four-time Grand Slam champion. Osaka looked good early, dominating the first set and continuing to push Gauff in the second when she broke the American's serve to lead 6-3, 4-3. Osaka looked to the finish line, but Gauff's resilience shone through as she won three consecutive games to equalize. The physical did take their toll at last, and Osaka had to call it a day, and that was probably an unlucky end to her hopes for the China Open.

Gauff faces Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva, who has been tearing the circuit apart in this tournament. Starodubtseva had beaten 10th seed Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 6-0 in the round of 16 earlier in the day. Gauff would not fancy an easy encounter. Finally, Zhang Shuai is also in great shape as a Chinese wild card, having remained unbroken so far in the tournament. Zhang, who came into the tournament on the back of a 24-match losing streak in singles, has changed fortunes overnight. She wrapped up her fourth successive win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Magdalena Frech to ensure her way to the quarterfinals.

She will next play 15th seed Paula Badosa, who belied form to stun US Open finalist Jessica Pegula with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory and further add intrigue to the remaining stages of the China Open. Gauff's Osaka turn of events was bittersweet, as she advanced but knew that it hadn't been how she'd wanted to take this victory. Fans and players alike hope Osaka can speedily recover from the misfortune, as she was just now beginning to get back to form in what had been shaping up to be a promising week.

Naomi Osaka Withdraws from China Open Due to Back Injury as Coco Gauff Advances

Gauff had just levelled the contest at 3-6 6-4 when Osaka called it a day.

Coco Gauff advances to the quarterfinals in the China Open after Naomi Osaka retires from her match with a back injury on Monday, conceding the first set and then retiring. The fans had been eagerly anticipating this much-anticipated fifth meeting between two of the biggest stars of the WTA Tour and their first since 2022. Gauff had just tied up the match one set apiece when Osaka, having received early medical treatment in the contest, concluded that she could no longer continue.

Osaka, who played strongly through the first set and most of the second, was said to appear bothered by pain as the match wore on. At 3-6, 6-3, she extended Gauff a hand to not risk further damaging her body. "Gauff has tremendous character, and she even helped Osaka carry her suitcases off the court before talking about it with her post-match interview."

"It was a great match up until this point," said Gauff, showing pain and frustration. "I wish Naomi a speedy recovery. No one wants to win a match like this, especially with one-set all." Gauff, though beaming with the win, conceded that neither her tennis nor her opponent's seemed good enough to wrap up the match. "Overall, I tried my best. It wasn't my best tennis," she added.
